Why U-values matter more than star ratings
NatHERS stars are a blunt instrument. The U-value is the truth.
Star ratings are useful headlines but they abstract away the physics. The U-value is the actual rate of heat transfer — in watts per square metre per degree of temperature difference.
A 7-star home with single-glazed aluminium windows is thermally contradictory; the windows alone will drag whole-house performance down regardless of wall insulation. Specify windows by U-value first, star rating second.
